Japan has been hit by a triple whammy: a staggering earthquake, a devastating tsunami, and a nuclear catastrophe. Japan is as well prepared to deal with the first two as any place could be — but the third… Well.
Nuclear power in Japan seems to be an industry plagued by technical problems, obfuscation, and recklessness. I hope the problems are resolved and the catastrophe contained — but let us also remember, from the vantage point of places where energy has been cheap and plentiful, that “alternative energy”– whether wind, solar, or nuclear — alone cannot save us. We have to think about what we consume as well. The cost of energy is a great deal higher than the price per gallon or kilowatt might suggest.
