I am deeply interested in questions of citizenship, democracy, and authority. My academic research focuses mostly on nineteenth- and twentieth-France because France struggled directly with those questions. The relationship of education, citizenship, and military service was at the core of many of the defining struggles in France. The questions of citizenship, service, submission, and freedom, are not, of course, confined to France; they remain particularly salient today, and are themes that recur in my non-academic writing.
