The Ossuaire de Douaumont, seen from the Mémorial de Verdun. In 1916, Verdun was the site of one of the largest battles of the Great War. Roughly 300,000 soldiers died here between February and September 1916; the skeletal remains of 130,000 of them, French and German alike, are housed in the Ossuaire.

Tourists entertaining themselves in the courtyard of the Palais Royal. In the eighteenth century, this was the site of one of Paris’ early arcades; luxury goods were sold here. At night, a somewhat different kind of trade and entertainment took place: gambling, prostitution, and all sorts of licentious behavior…

This vineyard on the north side of the Butte Montmartre is the oldest in Paris. That isn’t, however, saying much: the vineyard was planted in the 1930s…. Vineyards existed at Montmartre much earlier, of course, but this one was planted in part to stop the development of an apartment building. The wine produced here is sold at auction every year; proceeds go to local charities.
